Description
The Church of the Confraternity of the Holy Name of Jesus and of the “Battuti Bianchi” (white penitents), so called because of the colour of the habit they wore on ceremonial occasions, was designed by the architect Luigi Molinari d’Andorno in the first half of the 17th century.
This church has a single nave and a rectangular choir; the façade is subdivided into two structures crowned by a tympanum and linked together by two vaults. The confraternity broke up in the 19th century, the church was then abandoned and later, during World War I, used as a warehouse.
The outer façade, in baroque style, is outstanding for its harmonious elegance, lent variety by pilasters, vaults and niches; by a panel which originally bore a fresco; and by a large, framed window at the top. The steps leading up to the entrance are particularly noteworthy, as is the massive door of wood sculpted by the engraver Varetti in 1816.
